Swoyambhu

Swoyambhunath Stupa – one of the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu valley. Legend has it that Swoyambhu, meaning ‘Self- Created’ or ‘Self- Existent’, was formed when a miraculous lotus, planted by a past Buddha, blossomed from the lake covering Kathmandu valley and mysteriously radiated a brilliant light. Swoyambhunath stupa, also called the ‘Monkey Temple’ with its radiating light is a sight to behold in the Kathmandu skyline.
